Gas Safety Week runs from 14 to 20 September 2026, bringing households, engineers and organisations together to share practical advice that helps keep the nation gas safe. As colder weather approaches, it is a timely reminder for homeowners and landlords across Leicester and Leicestershire to check that boilers, fires, cookers and other gas appliances are working safely.
Arrange an annual gas safety check
Gas appliances should be safety checked and serviced regularly by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. An annual visit can identify wear, ventilation problems or unsafe combustion before they become more serious. It can also help a boiler run reliably as demand increases during autumn and winter.
If you are a landlord, you have specific legal responsibilities for gas safety in rented property. Keep the relevant records and make sure checks are completed within the required timescale. Homeowners should also keep servicing paperwork for their own appliances.
Always check the engineer
Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas work. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check both sides: the front confirms their identity and expiry date, while the reverse lists the types of gas work they are qualified to undertake. You can also verify an engineer through the Gas Safe Register.
Roy Lee Plumbing and Heating is Gas Safe registered, registration number 227303, and provides qualified domestic natural gas and LPG services.
Know the warning signs
Warning signs can include a lazy yellow or orange flame instead of a crisp blue flame, soot or staining around an appliance, excess condensation, a pilot light that repeatedly goes out, or an appliance behaving unusually. Do not attempt a repair yourself. Turn the appliance off if it is safe to do so and arrange an inspection.
Carbon monoxide cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Symptoms of exposure may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse or loss of consciousness. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm in the correct position, test it regularly and replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. An alarm supports proper servicing; it does not replace it.
If you smell gas
Extinguish naked flames, open doors and windows, avoid operating electrical switches, and leave the property. Call the National Gas Emergency Service from a safe place on 0800 111 999. If anyone may have carbon monoxide poisoning, move into fresh air and seek urgent medical help.
